Circular pilot lines within the automotive value chain
OBJECTIVE:
To define 3 pilot production line concepts with company consortia, focusing on: circularity, resource efficiency, and CO2 reduction. Information will be distributed through partners' networks to engage SME’s and larger companies in the MeuseRhine region (NL-BE-DE), ensuring optimal involvement and direct feedback
Partner WRC is the main contributor to Activity 1.1 – Automotive-specific eco metrics for circularity and resource-efficiency
Key Steps:
- Stakeholder Alignment
- Review of literature, automotive norms, Best Practices with ITA assisting WRC
- Analysis of Metrics Frameworks and tailoring to the automotive industry. We define specific indicators for eco-design, material use, LCA, CO2 footprint and true cost accounting. AMAC and FM will assist WRC with CO2 footprint analysis
- Implementation of the metrics to pilot line concepts to assess feasibility, effectiveness & potential challenges
- Alignment CSRD regulations for compliance
- Collecting feedback stakeholders involved in the Demo Concepting
- Documentation & Communication on the platform
Pilot lines Performance Targets:
3 Pilot Topic Leaders:
- ANL: battery pilot line,
- AMAC: Hydrogen Tank pilot line,
- ULG: Gearbox pilot line, will define load cases & performance targets including functional requirements, resource targets for the processes (e.g. material efficiency and waste reduction).
Deliverables:
Target Datasheets with Eco & Circularity targets, Resource Targets (material, energy) and Functional Requirements Pilot lines concepting and consortium building and deliver a proposal for the grant application for a virtual pilot line Evaluation of pilot line concepts.
Proposal for the pilot lines
Proposal for the pilot line on battery topic
Under guidance of the pilot leader ANL, a cross-border company consortium (or more) create a proposal which can be eligible for the grant application for a virtual pilot line on this topic:
- Battery packs last ~8 years
- 34M high-voltage batteries in EV fleet by 2030
- 1.3M EV batteries need repairs annually (2023-2035)
- Design for Circularity: Plan for repairability and design-for-disassembly
- Focus on remanufacturing strategies
Proposal for the pilot line on hydrogen tank
Under guidance of the pilot leader AMAC, a cross-border company consortium (or more) create a proposal which can be eligible for the grant application for a virtual pilot line on this topic:
- Use of recycled carbon fiber and bio-based resins
- Discontinuous filaments in wrapping yarn with optimized impregnation
- Adjusted winding technology and local patches for strength
- Composite materials replace metal bosses in hubs
Proposal for the pilot line on gearbox topic
Under guidance of the pilot leader ULg, a cross-border company consortium (or more) create a proposal which can be eligible for the grant application for a virtual pilot line on this topic:
- Recyclable Multimaterial design
- Address sealing and high-temp fatigue
- Focus on recycling
- Use recycled aerospace materials
- Reversible sealing/bonding and high-temp testing
